The Irish Champions Weekend is a new two-day meeting featuring ten Group races (Five Group 1 races) and will be run at Leopardstown on Saturday 13thSeptember and the Curragh on Sunday 14th September as a joint venture showcasing Ireland’s two premier Flat racecourses. The weekend features two iconic fixtures the QIPCO Irish Champion Stakes and the Palmerstown House Estate Irish St. Leger and is one of the richest weekends on the international racing calendar with prize money of over €3 million over the two days.
Leopardstown– Saturday 13th September
Goffs Champions Sale
On Saturday at Leopardstown, Goffs Champions Sale kicks off the day prior to the first race by holding a horses-in-training sale featuring a selection of highly-rated flat horses. The horse auction will take place at approximately 1pm at the racecourse and will feature 20 elite horses-in-training, mirroring the Goffs London Sale this summer, where the top lot was sold for £1.3million.
The first race will take place at approximately 3.30pm with the feature race the QIPCO Irish Champion Stakes taking place at 6.50pm. The QIPCO Irish Champion Stakes is one of the highest-rated race in the world and has a prize fund of €1 million. It has been won in the last five years by The Fugue, Snow Fairy, So You Think, Cape Blanco and Sea the Stars. The day also hosts the Group 1 Coolmore Fastnet Rock Matron Stakes which last year was won by La Collina giving jockey Chris Hayes his first Group 1 win.
Champion Style & Elegance
Given the calibre of the races, no doubt the style stakes will be high over the weekend. Los-Angeles based Irish actress, Victoria Smurfit, will jet in especially next month as the official Irish Champions Weekend Ambassador.
Irish fashion designer, Louise Kennedy will provide a €5k prize to the Best Dressed/Styled lady on Saturday at Leopardstown and the winner will also receive a visit to the Powerscourt Hotel, Co. Wicklow to the value of €3,000.
Registration in advance will not be available, there will be talent spotters here on the day.
The five fashion finalists from each day’s style competition will be entered into a draw to drive away in a brand new Jaguar XF. The winner will drive home in a new Jaguar XF which will be theirs to drive for one year. The draw will take place after the feature race at the Curragh on Sunday, September 14th.
The Champions Quarter Marquee will be a hub of activity on the day. It will be located in the Leopardstown Enclosure close to the parade ring. The Quarter will be the centre of social entertainment and will host the best dressed fashion competition, the winning line tipster panel pre-racing and live music from the Camembert Quartet after racing. Food refreshments and tote betting facilities will be available in this area.
